What shapes your home insurance quote

Every insurer weighs things a little differently, but these come up almost every time.

Location
Local weather, wildfire and flood risk, and distance to a fire station all matter.
Rebuild cost
Square footage, materials and local construction costs set your dwelling coverage.
Age and condition
The roof, plumbing, wiring and heating system affect how a home is rated.
Claims history
Past claims on you or the property can change eligibility and pricing.
Deductible
Choosing a higher deductible lowers the premium but raises what you pay after a claim.

Common coverage options

A quick guide to the terms you'll hear from agents.

Dwelling

Rebuilds or repairs the structure of your home after a covered loss.

Other structures

Covers detached garages, fences and sheds.

Personal property

Replaces your belongings if they're stolen or damaged.

Loss of use

Pays extra living costs while your home is being repaired.

Personal liability

Helps if someone is injured on your property and you're found responsible.

Home insurance questions

Still unsure? An agent can answer questions about your situation.

Does home insurance cover floods?

Standard homeowners policies usually exclude flood damage. Flood coverage is sold separately, through the National Flood Insurance Program or private insurers. Ask the agent who contacts you about it.

Is home insurance required?

No state law requires it, but mortgage lenders almost always do. Even without a mortgage, it protects what is likely your largest asset.

What's the difference between replacement cost and actual cash value?

Replacement cost pays to replace items with new ones of similar quality. Actual cash value subtracts depreciation, so the payout is lower.
